I recently rediscovered The Osterley Selection from the Latin Fathers (1950). Its preface praises the great classical authors while affirming the distinct worth of Christian writing. The volume gathers brief texts from the Fathers. I am working through it in podcasts with English translation, commentary, and the Latin. Today: an excerpt from St. Jerome’s Letter 14, urging Heliodorus to embrace the ascetic life.
